Site Audit

Site audit · no hosting needed

What is holding this site back — and what to fix first

Most site tools hand you a spreadsheet of everything that is technically imperfect and leave you to work out what matters. This one crawls the site page by page, sorts what it finds by what it is actually costing you, says what each finding means in plain words, and gives you the change to make. Any site you own — and for sites hosted with us, a second half no outside tool can do.

One issuelists every page it affects

A site with three hundred pages missing a description gets one finding listing all three hundred, not three hundred rows. A report you have to filter before you can read it is not a report.

What it checks on any site

Pages that are broken

Pages that error, return “not found” or refuse to load — including ones your own site links to, where a visitor hits a dead end and the links you built count for nothing.

Pages hiding from search

A “noindex” instruction left on after launch is one of the most common ways a site quietly disappears from Google. It is the first thing we look for.

Titles

Missing, duplicated, too short, or long enough to be cut off. The title is the clickable headline in search results, so it is worth getting right.

Descriptions

Missing, duplicated or cut off. Not a ranking factor — but it is the paragraph that decides whether anybody clicks.

Thin, empty and duplicated text

Pages with very little to say, pages that are blank unless scripting runs, and pages whose text matches another page and splits what both have earned.

Headings and images

Pages with no main heading or several, and images with no alt text — which is what a screen reader says instead of the picture.

Speed and weight

Pages slow enough to lose visitors before they appear, and pages large enough to be slow and expensive on a phone.

Security

Pages served without encryption, and secure pages that pull in something over plain HTTP — which drops the padlock and tells the visitor the page is not fully secure.

Dead outbound links

Links to other sites that no longer exist. A page full of them reads as abandoned.

A site audit report: the score, the severity breakdown, and each finding with the pages it affects
A real audit. Findings are sorted by what they cost you, and each one lists every page it affects.

And for sites hosted with us, the half nobody else can do

None of this is visible from outside the server, so no outside audit tool can tell you any of it. We can, because it is our server.

Is the site actually finished?

Whether it is fully set up or still waiting for something — most often for the domain’s nameservers to be pointed at us, which is done at your registrar.

Malware and integrity

Whether our scanner has flagged anything, and whether the integrity check on the core files, the configuration and the administrator is clean.

Plugins that are not allowed

Plugins we do not permit here, because they conflict with how sites are served or are known to be unsafe — named, so you know what to replace.

Disk and file-count pressure

A site running out of its file allowance starts failing uploads and updates in ways that look like unrelated bugs. We tell you before that happens.

Backups

Whether there is a recent backup to restore from — the question you only ask once it is too late.

PHP, HTTPS and caching

Whether the site runs a version that still gets security fixes, whether encryption is on, and whether it is served through a content network.

The site audit page: enter any address you own, with your monthly allowance beside it
Enter any site you own, or start one of your own sites in a click.

How it works

  1. Enter the address

Any site you own. If you host sites with us they are one-click buttons. The audit takes a few minutes.

  2. Prove it is yours, once

Sites hosted with us need no proof. For a site hosted elsewhere we audit the first few pages until you prove it is yours — with a DNS record, a meta tag or a file, whichever is easiest. It takes about a minute and only has to be done once per site.

  3. Fix, then re-crawl

Work down the list, press Re-crawl, and the score history shows exactly what your changes did.

We crawl politely, and we mean it

We read the site’s robots.txt first and obey it, including any crawl delay it asks for. We fetch one page at a time with a pause between them. We never fetch more pages than your plan allows. And we identify ourselves honestly in every request. An audit should never be something a site owner notices as load.

No hosting needed

The site audit is sold on its own and works on any site you own, wherever it is hosted. Create an account, choose “No hosting needed”, and it is in your menu straight away. If you do host with us, those sites need no verification and get the extra server-side half — and each site’s page gets a Site audit tab.

Questions people ask

Do I need a hosting plan?

No. The site audit is sold on its own and works on any site you own, hosted with us or anywhere else. Sites hosted with us simply get more out of it, because we can also check things that are not visible from outside.

Can I audit a site that is not hosted with you?

Yes. Sites hosted elsewhere are crawled shallowly until you prove the site is yours — enough to judge a site you are considering, not enough to be used as a crawling service pointed at strangers. Proving it takes about a minute, with a DNS record, a meta tag or a file, and only has to be done once.

Why do you need me to prove I own it?

Because otherwise anybody could point our crawler at anybody else’s site. A short audit of a site you have not verified is useful and harmless; a full crawl of one is neither.

How many pages will it crawl?

Up to your plan’s limit per audit — 100, 300 or 500 — following the links it finds from the address you give it. If robots.txt asks us not to fetch something, we do not fetch it, and the report says how many pages that applied to.

Will it slow my site down?

It should not be noticeable. We fetch one page at a time with a pause between them, and obey any crawl delay the site asks for.

Can you fix the problems for me?

Where the fix is something our platform already does — turning on HTTPS, caching — there is a button that takes you straight to it. Everything else comes with a plain-English explanation of what to change, which you or your developer can act on. If you would rather we did the work, ask us.

Will it e-mail me constantly?

No. One message per audit at most, and only when there is something to say — the first audit of a site, or a score that has moved. Never one message per finding.
